National Charity League San Diego del Norte Chapter plays ball with Miracle League

National Charity League San Diego del Norte Chapter (NCL San Diego del Norte) has just wrapped another exciting fall ball baseball season with Miracle League of San Diego. The Miracle League of San Diego is an organization created to give children and adults with special needs an opportunity to play baseball in an organized league. Each player is assigned a buddy who helps them play the game.

NCL San Diego del Norte chapter has been working with the organization since 2010 and each year between 25-28 pairs of mothers and daughters (patronesses and ticktockers) have stepped up to the plate to be buddies, operate the snack shack concession stands and cheer on these athletes, according to a news release.

This year’s NCL San Diego del Norte Chapter Co-Chair Renee Goode said in the news release, “NCL moms and daughters play a crucial role in the program by volunteering as buddies for the players, helping them bat, run the bases, and participate in the game. They also assist with setup, cheering, and creating a fun and supportive environment for everyone involved.”

Volunteering typically happens during the Miracle League’s game seasons, usually in the spring and fall. Mother-daughter teams also show up for special events throughout the year such as opening day and home run derby. NCL sustainers, mothers and daughters who have graduated from the organization, come together on opening days and bring unique goodie bags and treats for all the players. The home run derby is a fun event that gathers local professional baseball players and celebrities to pitch for the athletes and raise money for the organization.

“This is a beloved organization to our chapter,” said NCL San Diego del Norte Chapter President Dr. Preeti Sonni-Mehta in the news release. “Many of our ticktockers develop friendships with their assigned athletes that carry-on beyond the season. Everyone who has participated in Miracle League of San Diego finds it to be one of the most rewarding experiences they have in National Charity League.”

Goode agrees and said in the news release, “The Miracle League is more than just baseball—it’s about building connections, spreading joy, and creating memories for everyone involved. It’s a beautiful way to give back and experience the power of inclusion firsthand.”

NCL del Norte Chapter is based in North County. The NCL San Diego del Norte Chapter new membership for current 6th graders opens in January 2025. To receive more information send an email to: MembershipSanDiegodelNorte@NCLonline.org.
